Medical opinions play an important role in VA disability claims when a Veteran needs to establish a clear connection between a current medical condition and military service. From a medical standpoint, this connection—often referred to as a “nexus”—must be supported by evidence, clinical reasoning, and a thorough review of records.

An independent medical nexus evaluation focuses on whether the available medical evidence supports a service connection, secondary connection, or aggravation relationship based on accepted medical standards.

Why Medical Opinions Matter

From a medical perspective, a nexus opinion helps address questions such as:

  • Whether a current condition is consistent with documented in-service events, exposures, or injuries

  • Whether medical records support a continuity or progression of symptoms

  • Whether one condition may have caused or aggravated another

The strength of a medical opinion depends on evidence and reasoning, not outcomes.


Independent Medical Nexus Evaluations

An independent medical nexus evaluation is a records-only medical review conducted by a licensed medical provider who is not involved in a Veteran’s ongoing care. The purpose of the evaluation is to determine whether a medical nexus opinion can be supported based on the evidence provided.

These evaluations are commonly considered when:

  • A claim was denied due to “no service connection”

  • A prior C&P opinion did not fully address the medical history

  • Secondary or aggravation conditions are involved

  • There are gaps in records that require medical explanation


What a Nexus Evaluation Involves

A comprehensive nexus evaluation typically includes:

  • Review of service treatment records and relevant post-service medical records

  • Analysis of diagnoses, timelines, and clinical findings

  • Application of medical reasoning consistent with VA probability standards

  • A written medical nexus opinion when medically appropriate

Not every evaluation results in a written opinion. Medical conclusions are based solely on evidence.


Common Challenges Veterans Encounter

Veterans often face challenges such as:

  • Extensive or fragmented medical records

  • Conflicting medical opinions already in the file

  • Long gaps between service and diagnosis

  • Conditions that require detailed medical explanation

An independent medical review helps clarify whether the evidence supports a nexus from a medical standpoint.

It’s important to understand that:

  • Medical opinions may be favorable, neutral, unfavorable, or declined

  • No outcomes or VA decisions are guaranteed

  • The process is medical, not legal or advocacy-based

  • No claim filing or representation is provided

The goal is medical clarity—not prediction of results.

Full terms are presented in the Service Agreement at the end of the intake form. – The service is limited to a review of medical and service records that I voluntarily submit at time of payment/checkout. – The service provided is an independent medical opinion only. – No in-person or virtual examination is provided. – No diagnosis, treatment, prescription, or ongoing medical care is rendered. – No provider–patient relationship is established. – Independent Medical Nexus does not access VA systems, retrieve records on my behalf, or submit documents to the VA. – Independent Medical Nexus does not provide legal advice, advocacy, or representation before the VA. – The medical opinion is based solely on the records and information I submit. – A medical opinion may be favorable, neutral, unfavorable, or declined depending on whether the evidence supports a medically reasonable conclusion. **Records Policy** I confirm **all records submitted represent everything I want reviewed**. **The medical review and opinion will be based solely on records received at time of payment/checkout.** **Review begins immediately upon receipt of records.** Additional records later require new service purchase (full fee applies). **Client Responsibilities** – I am responsible for submitting the completed nexus letter or IMO to the VA or to any representative or attorney assisting with my claim. – This review is limited to the condition(s) identified in my intake. Additional conditions, revisions, or addendums may require an additional fee. **Payment & Refund Policy** – Full payment is required before review begins. – Payments are **non-refundable once records are accessed OR review has begun**. – A refund may be issued **only if** written cancellation request received **before records are accessed OR before review has begun**, less a **$350 administrative fee**. Chargebacks will be contested and do not relieve you of your financial responsibilities. **No Outcome Guarantees** – Independent Medical Nexus does not guarantee VA claim approval, disability ratings, or acceptance of any opinion. – VA decisions remain solely at the discretion of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
