Who Can Write a Nexus Letter for VA Claims

What the VA actually considers

A nexus letter must come from a qualified medical provider. However, credentials alone are not what determines whether the opinion is accepted.

The VA evaluates whether the opinion includes clear, evidence-based medical reasoning that applies directly to the veteran’s records.

Why Many Nexus Letters Are Not Accepted

Even when written by licensed providers, many nexus letters are not persuasive because they:

  • Do not reference the veteran’s full medical history

  • Provide conclusions without explanation

  • Do not address service connection directly

  • Lack VA-aligned probability language

  • Do not evaluate secondary or aggravation relationships

The issue is not who writes the letter. It is how the medical reasoning is developed.

VA Doctors vs Independent Medical Opinions

VA providers can document conditions and provide treatment.
However, many do not provide detailed nexus opinions with structured rationale for claim purposes.

Independent medical opinions are often used when:

  • A claim was denied

  • A connection is not clearly documented

  • Secondary conditions are being evaluated

  • Additional medical analysis is needed

What Matters Most

For a nexus letter to carry weight, it must:

  • Be based on a full review of records

  • Clearly explain the connection to service

  • Use appropriate probability language

  • Include a structured medical rationale

Without these elements, the opinion may not be persuasive in VA review.

Independent Medical Nexus (IMN)

Independent Medical Nexus provides structured, records-based medical opinions developed specifically for VA claim evaluation.

Each case is reviewed individually using VA-aligned medical reasoning and clinical analysis tied directly to the records provided.
